The following conversation is a reflection of how culture, personal experiences, and hard work shape an artist’s journey in fashion design. In this interview, Egyptian designer and Fashion Trust Arabia winner Yasmin Mansour opens up about her creative process, the inspirations that have guided her work, and the pivotal moments that have defined her path. Her experiences reveal not just the practical challenges she has faced, but also the deeper connection she has with her heritage and the people who’ve influenced her. Furthermore, Mansour most recently kicked ass at LVMH. This insight into the mind of a designer offers a glimpse into the dedication, inspiration, and perseverance required to succeed in the fashion world.

Talk to us about your background
Growing up Egyptian, my heritage has always been a big part of who I am. It influences not only my work as a designer but also how I see the world. The rich culture, history, and traditions of Egypt constantly inspire me and shape my identity in many things I create and do. I studied art direction and fashion design, but my early interest in photography and seeing the world through a lens shaped how I view creativity. It inspired me to want people not just to wear my work, but to truly see and experience my products the way I see them — as art, almost like watching a movie.

How would you describe your aesthetic?
My aesthetic is about breaking away from the ordinary while maintaining sophistication. It’s expressive and unconventional, yet there’s always a refined balance that keeps it grounded and timeless. I feel connected to my Egyptian roots, and my heritage plays a big role in shaping my work. Whether it’s through subtle details, patterns, or the overall vision of my designs, there’s always an element of Egypt shining through. It’s not always intentional, but being rooted in my culture naturally influences how I create.

What moment stands out as a deeply personal victory?
Being able to dress Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa was a deeply personal victory. She has always inspired me as a person, and seeing my work on someone I admire was an incredibly proud and rewarding moment.

How did it feel winning at the FTA Awards?
When I applied to be part of the experience in Marrakech, I didn’t expect to win. My goal was to be there, share my work with the world, and take in everything the event offered. When I won, it felt like a sign that I was on the right path and a reminder to keep going and believe in my vision.

Can you walk us through a day in your creative process?
Before starting any new collection, I take time to escape for a couple of weeks. Once I’m back, I dive into sketching, exploring fabrics, and experimenting with different concepts. From there, it’s all about bringing those ideas to life through sampling and refining until the collection feels complete. I’ve also learned it’s never a good idea to force a new design or collection — let your ideas flow and refine them until you’re satisfied.

Who is your diva?
In my field, Elsa Schiaparelli. She fought tirelessly for her brand, staying true to her vision despite challenges. Her bold, imaginative approach to fashion has inspired me to take risks and stay authentic in my own work.
