Talk to us about your background. How have your cultural experiences shaped your identity, not just as a designer but as a person?
I’ve been an expat my entire life, which is essential to who I am as a designer. Growing up with a multicultural upbringing, I always strived to explore the concept of “belonging,” which has been central to my work. Living far from home helped me understand that cultural heritage has both tangible and intangible elements. My work is based on these intangibles—emotions, dialects and shared cultural experiences—that define my identity.
Talk to us about your studies, and how they have influenced your creative approach.
Studying interior architecture trained my eye for detail, emphasizing practicality and formal guidelines. Though limiting, this foundation allowed me to explore beyond traditional boundaries. I now focus on pushing design beyond practicality while considering emotional depth, always asking: “What emotion am I trying to showcase, and will it be understood at first glance?”
Why did you pick this line of work, and what influences shaped your aesthetic?
I chose this field because it allows me to explore design freely and to continuously grow. I’m driven by curiosity and a constant “what, why and how?” mindset, which suits my style—endlessly evolving. The freedom of not adhering to specific guidelines lets me reinvent myself whenever necessary.
How would you describe your aesthetic in your own words?
My aesthetic blends minimalism and bold expression, using soft color palettes and textures to evoke tranquility and sophistication. Clean lines and geometric shapes suggest modern elegance, while organic shapes reflect nature. My designs are timeless yet modern, focusing on harmony between form, function and artistry. My work is a mix of traditional and modern elements, reflecting my cultural heritage. Earthy tones and natural materials link to Egypt’s landscapes, while intricate patterns and flowing shapes draw from traditional crafts. These elements, combined with contemporary sensibilities, tell a unique story that honors my roots.
When you’re creating a new piece, is there a specific place or experience you return to for inspiration?
I mentally return to Cairo’s streets, drawing inspiration from the city’s complexity. The more I reflect on it, the more I find its influence in my designs—its contradictions and beauty inspire my creative process.
What were some of the biggest challenges that you faced along your journey thus far?
My most significant challenge to date has been recovering from a car accident that required the surgical implantation of titanium in my arm. This experience has tested my resilience and adaptability as I worked toward regaining full function. I taught myself how to write and draw with my left hand while I regained strength and movement in my right hand because the one thing that helped me recover was being creative.
Who is your Diva?
My mother is my Diva. Her flawless work ethic and guidance shaped me into who I am. She instilled the importance of hard work, independence, and following one’s passion, no matter where life leads.
